Download Free Ringtones - At The Speed Of Sound

November 26th, 2008

If you want to download free ringtones I assure you that you don’t have to go very far to do it. There are numerous websites on the internet advertising exactly this service. However after a little investigation I discovered this process what not quite as simple as it looked at first glance.

First of all apparently there are three different types of ringtones you can download; realtones, monophonic tone, and polyphonic tones. Maybe you are lucky enough to know what this means at first glance but I assure I do not. I decided to investigate and see what the site would tell me to gd when I picked a song. I did so and then had to indicate which country I was from as the process is apparently different depending on where you live. After that I received a message that said “After you complete the transaction, you will receive and SMS. Just go to the specified WAP address and you can download the item straight to your phone. Please make sure your phone is WAP enabled”. Now this message makes I sound like this is a simple process however as I do not know what an SMS is or a WAP address is, I was slightly confused, and all this to download free ringtones.

Now I did a little looking around and it seems as though WAP is a browser on your phone where you can type in web addresses and ringtone codes given you have the WAP code for downloading the free ringtones.

This all seems a little like Greek tome and I find it amazing that an entire language has developed revolving around ringtones. You expect it for computers do to the complexity of them and their importance in everyday life, but for ringtones? They are really so important to the functioning of society that people have spent lord only knows how much time developing and entire system so people can make their phones ring with whatever song they want.

Nelson Widrow has written numerous articles about many topics including TV ringtones and download free ringtones.

Speed Up Your Pocket PC Guide

November 22nd, 2008

While new Pocket PC owners are usually excited with their purchase,
their enthusiasm is often dampened once they run into stability and
speed issues. This guide will walk you through several tips to keep
your machine slick and well-oiled. As with any system or
registry tweaks, always backup in case something does go amiss.
Remember, we’re not responsible for any loss of data.

1. Disable Windows menu animation

Switching
off eye candies like animation keeps your handheld zippy. To do so,
you’ll need a registry editor like PHM RegEdit to modify the registry.
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEMGWEMenu, then change the value
of “AniType” from 6 (default) to 0. This disables the menu animation.

If doing this is a daunting task, an easy alternative is with RegKing. This nifty freeware lets you toggle the menu animation easily and offers other tweaks.

2. Increase display cache

Another
tip to speed up the display is to increase the glyph cache value.
However, this will take up more system memory. Launch your registry
editor and browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMGDIGLYPHCACHE. Change
the value of “limit” from 8192 (default) to 16384 or even 32768.

If meddling the registry is unnerving for you, RegKing gets this done in a few taps.

3. Close not minimize

If
you are unaware, when you tap on the close button, the program only
minimizes. Hence, you may end up with a string of programs running on
the background taking up valuable memory. Check out our wrapper on
freeware task managers to better manage your device’s resources.

If you don’t mind spending a little, we recommend Spb Pocket Plus. In addition to task management, this feature-laden software adds a launcher, battery meter and other functions.

4. Remove unused programs

Although
processor speed is important to system performance, the availability of
memory plays an equally crucial role. When it comes to Pocket PC, the
more free memory, the better. Programs consumes precious memory so
uninstall those you don’t require. Go to Start/Settings/System/Remove
Programs to uninstall them.

5. Relocate big files to storage card

Instead
of keeping space-intensive data on your main memory, move these files
to your storage cards instead. A quick way to identify files hogging
the space is via WIMR.
Thereafter, using the built-in File Explorer, just cut and paste to
move files off the main memory. Make sure these are data files rather
than executables or you may break your programs.

6. Install programs onto external storage

If
you need a host of software on your Pocket PC, there’s no way all of
them can be installed on your main memory. Whenever possible, choose to
install programs onto a flash memory card or even non-volatile memory
such as iPAQ File Store. This frees up main memory for running
programs.

7. Remove redundant folders and files

Like
your Windows desktop, the uninstall routine on the Pocket PC often does
a bad job leaving orphaned folders and files. Manually remove them
using File Explorer.

In addition, programs may accumulate redundant data over time. Rather than removing them manually, install SpeedClean, a free tool that deletes Temporary internet files, Cookies and the Temp folder with ease.

8. Clean up the registry

Over time your registry may be choked up with redundant entries. Hunt these down with Remover or Pocket Mechanic.

Want
to save some dough and don’t mind getting your hands dirty? Try
manually removing them from the registry. Launch your registry editor
and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREApps and
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWARE. Delete entries of programs that have been
uninstalled but still lurk in the registry. This won’t do as good a job
by Remover and Pocket Mechanic but should be suffice.

8. Overclocking

If having the fastest Pocket PC means the world to you, try overclocking it. Immiersoft’s XCPUScalar or Pocket Hack Master

from Anton Tomov let you run your handheld at speeds higher than it’s
designed for. Beware though, there’s a good chance your device may
freeze or even hard-reset.

Building the Best Subwoofer Speaker Box Enclosure For Your Car or SUV

November 22nd, 2008

Box Building

Each type of sub requires it’s own type of box. If a sub is installed in a box larger or smaller than what is supposed to, it will sound distorted/bad and could be destroyed. Boxes can be built in many shapes, but it is important that the box volume is calculated accurately to achieve maximum performance.

Materials

A box MUST be very sturdy. Most common building materials are 5/8″ or thicker particle board or medium density fiberboard. If building a box with Plexiglas, do not use anything less that 1/2 inch thick. A common material used to mold complex shaped boxes is fiberglass, but it is very hard to work with, and require several layers for a smooth finish.

Gluing, Sealing

Glue should be used at all joints to fill any spaces. Any spaces will degrade the performance of your subs, not to mention the annoying noise air makes when being pushed out of a small hole. On applying the glue, let it cure for at least 24 hours before mounting the subs. This is a precautionary mesure to protect the rubbers used to make the subs from the high fumes that some manufacturers glue products have.

Holding Joints Together

In connecting box joints, it is best to screw the joints every four inches or so using 2″ - 2-1/2″ screws. Pre-drill about 3/4″ deep, so that screws do not split the wood at the edges, especially when working with particle/bashboard.

Should I have a Box for Each Sub?

It is advised to have a separate chamber for each sub. Even though not necessary, here are two reasons why such a directive should be taken: First, if one of the subs blows, then the volume of the box will be “twice” as big for the one remaining working sub. This could cause problems and even damage the other sub. The second reason is bracing. Building a box with a divider in the middle will make the box more rigid.

Ports

Ports must be built into your box design to channel out the air made by the sub’s vibrations. If a pre-made port is not available, the most common material is PVC . PVC is very rigid, comes in different diameters. Cut the tubing at the desired length. Consider the volume the port takes up when calculating the box volume. Cut a hole in the box. Make sure the hole is as perfect as possible to minimize gaps between the box and the tube. A couple wood braces can be added for screwing the port top the box. Seal the gaps using a proper sealant (Evo Stick or even silicone can be used).

Bracing

Boxes that are more than a foot in width or length or height, should be braced so that the box becomes more sturdy. This can be accomplished with a piece of wood maybe 3 or 4 inches wide across the box). It is a good idea to put wood blocks on the corners for reinforcement. Always consider that blocks, braces, neon lights, etc. inside a box take up space and should be accounted for when calculating internal volume.

Damping/Filling

Damping increases subwoofer efficiency by dissipating some energy that affects the sub, particularly the voice coil. It is advisable to put damping material inside a box. Pillow polyfill and fiberglass insulation are common, though polyfill is a lot easier on your skin. Polyfill also “tricks” a sub into thinking it is in a bigger box. Play around with different amounts of polyfill until you get the desired results.

Making it look professional

Make the box surface free from holes and spaces by adding wood fill. If you decide to paint the box, then you should apply primer first. Carpet or Vinyl padding is the best covering to use since they easily cover any outer blemishes on teh box and give the box a ’smooth’ outlook. Be carefull when cutting the vinyl or carpet since such cutters tend to be very sharp. Cut a piece of carpet (or vinyl) big enough to cover the whole box. Apply adhesive to both box and carpet (EvoStick works great). Wait about a minute and place the fabric over the wood. For the best fit, stretch the fabric when applying it. The fabric should wrap around and end in a place of the box that will not be seen. Do one side at a time, cutting excess carpet. If possible, add staples preferabke heavy duty staples that can penetrate the box, to hold the fabric at the ends. NOTE: Do not cover each panel of the box before mounting it together since it would be impossible to find any ‘leaks’ that may exist in the box design much less fill these leaks.

Introduction to Betting Games Betting Fanatics Contend in: Betting House Taking a Chance

November 22nd, 2008

On the assumption you haven’t grasped betting establishment gambling, do read on —

For the sake of clarity, a betting saloon is an edifice that accomodates friendly gambling. Paying Customers can take chances by operating the slot machines or trying out some other betting pastimes. Gaming establishment games habitually include precisely determined likelihoods informing them that safeguard the management preserves the upper hand over the gambling aficionados.

A large amount of betting house games can get you overly dependent very swiftly. A case in point: the archetypal 1-armed-bandit, a mechanical contraption with 3, sometimes more cogs which orbit when a lever latched onto it is pushed. The contraption routinely pays out referring to a set arrangement of glyphs seen on the dials on the gadget. Disastrously, gaming hall games tend to push a false impression of remaining in control, conning the patron: the punter is charged with alternatives, but in reality they can’t really compensate for the client’s long-term negative odds. That is due to the betting establishment never paying up the full stake as expected. This systematic policy is regularly found in popular casino games like five card stud, dice games, roulette or blackjack.

Five-card stud is really an immensely fashionable casino game. The gamblers, holding either fully or partially covered hands, place the stakes into a pot in the center that is ultimately given to the prevailing player controlling the leading hand. (Of course, the shameless bluffing hand may actually win as well.)

online casino and betting

Not far removed from seven-card stud poker, blackjack is also a very fashionable casino pastime. A substantial part of its reputation is by virtue of its particular mix of luck and know how and choice making, not to mention a process labeled “counting”. This is a particularly sophisticated gambling tactics in which gambling buffs are in a position to significantly skew the probabilities of the card game to their own profit both by wagering & systematic opetations correlating with the cards deployed.

Craps is another well-known pastime using the throw of dice. Clients bet on the outcome of of one spin, or on a sequence of rolls of two dice. Dissimilar to blackjack, there isn’t any conceivable bona fide winning system players could profit by to bend the odds.

Roulette is an immensely popular casino based game of chance; a croupier rotates a roulette wheel which encloses precisely 37 (French roulette) or, respectively precisely 38 (applies to American roulette) separately numbered chambers in which the white ball must come to rest, thereby deciding the winning number as well as the other chances that will always come with it. Whenever a participant wagers on a specific number and is successful, which is to say they’ve got a lucky hand, the set premium will be thirty five to one, the original wager itself being repaid. So in total it is increased by 36.

Car Video Monitors: They’re Not Just For Your Kids Anymore

November 21st, 2008

When car video monitors were first introduced to the market, they primarily consisted of either an overhead or flip down monitor. These types of monitors were geared mainly towards parents who took long trips in the family minivan with their kids. These days, there are quite a few more car video monitor options available to consumers with varying reasons as to what they are used for. Of course the market is still filled with parents looking to keep their keeps occupied during long rides, but now people are installing monitors to entertain business clients, review DVD presentations on the way to a meeting or play the latest Madden football game with their buddies on the way to a pro football game. Aside from the overhead and flip down monitors other types of car video monitors available to consumers include: in-dash monitors, headrest monitors, sun visor monitors, and mirror monitors.

Overhead Car Video Monitors: Overhead monitors are exactly what their name implies. You can attach an overhead monitor to the ceiling of your vehicle. Typically they are installed in larger vehicles such as minivans and sport utility vehicles since they require a good amount of headroom for the overhead installation. An overhead car video monitor often fits over your vehicle’s overhead lighting unit. A typical overhead monitor is 7 - 10 inches, but you can buy monitors as large as 20 inches.

Flip Down Car Video Monitors: A flip down monitor is basically an overhead monitor that flips down for viewing. When the monitor is not being viewed it can be flipped up to add more overhead space to the vehicle. This type of monitor is also popular with consumers that own cars, who want an overhead car video monitor for their back seat passengers. Flip down monitors come in the same sizes as overhead monitors.

In-Dash Car Video Monitors: In-dash car video monitors provide video entertainment to the often-neglected front seat passenger (and driver, although I don’t recommend viewing the in-dash monitor while you are driving). An in-dash monitor is usually one component of a larger unit that includes a TV tuner and receiver. Most in-dash monitors flip up from the unit when being viewed and flip back down to provide more front seat space when it is not being used. These monitors are usually 7 inches or less.

Headrest Car Video Monitors: Headrest monitors can either be mounted to the back of your vehicle’s headrest or mounted into your headrest with the use of a mounting bracket and mounting kit. There are even headrest replacement monitors that are designed to replace your vehicle’s original headrest. This allows the consumer to avoid cutting into the original headrest. When you sell or get rid of your vehicle you can replace the headrest monitors with the original headrests. Headrest monitors can be used in conjunction with or as a replacement to an overhead monitor. They are especially popular with car owners, since cars typically do not provide the necessary overhead space for overhead monitors. Headrest monitors are also generally 7 inches or less.

Sun Visor Car Video Monitors: Sun visor monitors can either be mounted into your vehicle’s current sun visor or purchased as a replacement to your original sun visor. Manufacturers of sun visor replacement monitors have designed the visors in many different colors and textures to match your vehicle’s interior as closely as possible. A typical sun visor monitor is 5 inches in length although they make them as large as 7 inches.

Mirror Car Video Monitors: Mirror car video monitors are LCD displays that are designed to fit over the existing rear-view mirror in your vehicle. Besides being used as a traditional video monitor, mirror monitors are also great for rear view cameras as well. This is the smallest type of monitor available for your vehicle and is generally no more than 4 inches long.

Nokia 3250 Music Phone Quick Review

November 21st, 2008

You could say it’s a budget version of the N91 and aimed for the mass markets. Nokia 3250 will not keep Santa busy as the phone is shipping next year in the first quarter 2006. Estimated retail price is 350 Euros.

Key features:

- Supports MP3, M4A, WMA, AAC and eAAC+ music files
- 3.5mm connector for headphones
- 262K color TFT display (resolution of 176 x 220 pixels)
- Stereo FM radio
- Bluetooth
- USB 2.0
- Triband
- Talktime up to 3 hours, music listening up to 10 hours

Comments and Conclusion

The Nokia 3250 is an good alternative if you plan to buy a music phone. In terms oif technical specs and features it seems to be somewhat better than the Motorola Rokr iTunes phone. The Motorola Rokr has USB 1.1 (can take up to 40 mins. to transfer 100 songs), 512MB TransFlash memory, and the iTunes software is limited to store 100 songs. The Nokia 3250 uses the Nokia Audio Manager software to transfer music files from PC to phone. This is a clear disadvantage compared to Motorola that synch with iTunes.

P.S.

Nokia has traditionally been using the MMC format for storage, but this phone relies entirely on microSD (TransFlash) cards. The microSD card is based on TransFlash, which was developed by SanDisk in cooperation with Motorola and is the world’s smallest flash RAM memory card format.

Nicolas Fogelholm is from NokiaLand (Finland) and writes about Nokia related news at his blog. Nokia News

Humor - Hosting A Roast

November 18th, 2008

Everybody loves a roast and not the kind you put in the oven, though they can be quite delicious. We’re talking about the kind of roast where the guest of honor is the one who ends up in the hot seat. If you’re going to put on one of these things, you better follow some common sense rules of your roast could turn into a five alarm fire with your guests running for the exits.

The first thing you want to do when hosting a roast is to make sure that the guest of honor is actually okay with the idea. The last thing you want is to be up there poking fun at the guy and he’s looking at you with daggers coming out of his eyes. A roast is no fun if the main course runs from the table in a huff.

The next thing you want to do is select a roastmaster who can run the event professionally and in good taste. The roastmaster is the person who introduces each person who is going to speak at the roast and will occasionally make a few jokes himself. Your roastmaster can make or break your roast.

Before the program begins, the roastmaster should speak with each person who is going to speak at the roast to find out what they plan to say. This way he can coordinate his remarks with each of the performers. Also, you want to go over the whole program to eliminate the possibility of duplicate jokes. He should also work with each presenter to make sure the routines are sharp and no more than 2 minutes.

The roastmaster also needs to work with the guest of honor to help him prepare a counter roast for the end of the program. This is where the guest of honor gets to return insults to the people who took shots at him during the evening. The roastmaster must make sure that this is all done in good taste.

When the roastmaster opens the program, he must keep in mind that there are going to be people in the audience who are not comfortable with poking fun at others. It is his job to tell them that we only roast people that we like and that it is all in fun. By poking fun at himself at the beginning, this will help put the audience at ease.

When presenting each roaster, the roastmaster should throw a roast line at each of them to start them off. This is a great stepping stone for each roaster to push off of. This makes it so that everyone basically is being made fun of and nobody feels singled out.

When the guest of honor does his counter roast, this should be the highlight of the evening. Don’t try to top this as the roastmaster. This is the guest of honor’s chance to “get even” and should not be upstaged.

If you follow the above tips, your roast should go off without anybody getting burned.

Thighway Robbery

November 18th, 2008

Spring has finally returned to our neck of the woods.

I love Spring time. I look forward to it more with each passing year. I usually start counting down the days right after Christmas. Winter doesn’t seem that long if you do it that way.

Yesterday the temperatures were in the mid-seventies, so I decided to shed my jeans, put on my bathing suit and start to work on my tan.

That’s when I discovered that a horrible crime had been committed sometime during the long winter.

When I looked at my reflection in the mirror I screamed like a panther.

Somebody had stolen my legs!

They had been replaced by a pair of legs that, I swear, belonged to a chicken at one time. The thighs were covered in cottage cheese and there were tiny blue and purple lines running every which way. It reminded me of a page out of a road Atlas.

I ran screaming to my hubby and he immediately began to map out our vacation on my left calf.

“These aren’t my legs” I sobbed. “I’m calling the Sheriff. Somebody broke in the house and took mine while I was asleep.”

“Now, calm down,” Hubby advised. “they’ll look fine once they’re tanned.”

(The man never gets excited! I could tell him the house is burning to the ground and he would say, “Okay, let me get my shoes on and I’ll go have a look…”)

“But honey, I can’t walk around all summer with these lumpy, blue veined, chicken legs. There’s no way that I am going outside until winter!”

I pulled on my ragged sweat pants and slunk away to the kitchen, feeling like a scolded dog.

My daughter would be back from the beach in the morning. I couldn’t wait to tell her what had happened. I knew she would be sympathetic! She knows all about legs and how important they are. The next morning I was waiting on the porch when she drove up.

I noticed it the moment she got out of the car!

I should have known!

She was wearing a pair of Daisy Duke shorts and MY LEGS! I recognized them right away cause they were tanned and shapely and there was nary a vein in sight! And not one lump of cottage cheese could be seen anywhere…

Kids! Why do they think they can just take anything they see lying around, without even asking?

I was all set to give her a good shaking and demand that she return them immediately…and then I noticed how happy she looked. So I just sighed and decided not to let on that I knew she’d taken them.

And, after all, the children WILL inherit everything we own, once Hubby and I are gone.

Oh well! Might just as well let her enjoy her inheritance while she is young.

And I’ll have to admit…they do look great on her!

Like Hubby says, these legs might not be all that bad… once they get some sun.
